Proposition 65
California Proposition 65 Warning
What is Proposition 65?
Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings if their products contain certain chemicals known to the state to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
The law applies to all businesses selling products in California, including online retailers. The list of regulated chemicals includes both naturally occurring and synthetic substances found in various consumer goods, including food, supplements, and household products.
Why Do Some Products Have a Proposition 65 Warning?
A Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe or violates any health regulations. Instead, it indicates that the product contains one or more chemicals listed by California under Proposition 65, even if the levels are low.
California’s warning requirements are often more strict than federal and industry safety standards. Many of the substances on the Proposition 65 list are commonly found in everyday products, including naturally occurring elements in soil, water, and plants.
What Does the Warning Look Like?
If a product requires a Proposition 65 warning, you may see the following label:
⚠ WARNING: This product may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. For more information, visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
